Resolve To Have A Cleaner Home In 2019

The New Year is all about fresh starts and resolving to have a cleaner home is up there with eating better and exercising. It’s one of the best things you can do for your health. A clean, sanitized space can help stave off infections and viruses, plus it gives your mind the clarity to focus on the things that matter to you most.

Having a healthy, organized space is attainable (we promise!) you just need a boost to get started. That’s where we come in! We’ve come up with some housecleaning resolutions that should definitely be on your New Year’s list.

Clear Out The Clutter

The New Year comes with bags and boxes of new stuff from holiday gift giving. Before you start cramming your closets full with new clothes, dumping electronics into drawers and stuffing toyboxes with new plushies and gadgets, take a good look at what’s already taking up space and get rid of what you don’t wear or use. The goodwill doesn’t have to end with December. Second-hand and thrift stores still accept clothes and many shelters accept used, wiped electronics. Throw out any toys that are broken or missing essential pieces.

Clean Those Items That Often Get Skipped

We understand dishes need to be washed daily and bathrooms scrubbed every week, but there are housecleaning tasks that we don’t do nearly as often as we should. Closet shelves collect dust just like end tables and their floors need cleaning just like the ones in your living room. You shower every day, your shower curtain deserves the same attention. Make sure steam can escape your bathroom by using a window or fan and keep your shower curtain closed so it can dry. Once a week spray the inside of your shower and curtain with a 10:1 solution of water and bleach. Also, clean your cleaning equipment. Wash the bristles of brooms and brushes with hot soapy water and clean your vacuum’s hoses and filters.

Inspect Your Indoor Air Quality

Check the batteries in carbon monoxide detectors and test to be sure they’re working properly. Test your home for radon. This colorless, odorless gas causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year, according to the S. Environmental Protection Agency. Testing kits can be purchased through your state’s radon program. Replace furnace filters and clean the inside of vents and ducts, especially around the dryer. Lastly, make sure your home’s outside vents haven’t been covered by debris or shingles.

Make a Plan and Stick to it

“Hell is paved with good intentions,” harsh, but true. We start every new year with good intentions to never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink and to keep up on laundry, then come February we’re back to stacks and mountains of messes. Research says it takes 21 days to make a habit. Stick to your housecleaning plan for all of January and you’ll be surprised how easy it becomes.
